The internet has changed medical literature in countless ways. The sharing of the information contained within this literature alone is astounding. Professionals share with other professionals as well as with the general public.
Just Between Professionals
It was not that long ago that when medical professionals were not physically nearby then they were isolated from each other. True, there have been methods of long distance communication for a long time but these methods left much to be desired. The rise of the internet, however, has allowed professionals to share information with each other more quickly. And they no longer had to share from one professional to another.
Now the information could be posted on the internet and share with the medical community at large. From this came sharing, comments, criticisms, and a faster spread of information than was ever seen before. This feedback and spread of information influenced subsequent medical literature because medical professionals around the world were now much less likely to reinvent the wheel when it had already been done by someone else.
Medical Literature For The Masses
Medical literature was once kept primarily within the medical community. At times this was a deliberate move while at other times it was just the lack of a means to disperse the medical literature to the larger community. But the internet changed all that.
Medical literature can now be posted and its information shared with laypeople too. While once medical journals were relegated to the offices of medical professionals, now information came to be available to everyone. And once this medical literature was available then the information contained within it was translated into simpler terms and regurgitated on various web sites. Any random person wishing to learn about research performed on any topic now stands a good chance of finding it using the internet.
The Creation Of Medical Literature
More than that, the internet helped these non-medical professionals a more active role in the creation of this medical literature. Medical professionals could now ask questions of the general populace, conduct research even, and do so quickly, easily, and for very little cost.
This newfound pool of research subjects changed the face of medical literature. The constraints that had previously colored the research that went into medical literature were no longer as much of an issue. Distance became a minor obstacle. The accessibility of proper subjects became a non-issue.
The cost of research went down considerably when the main tool needed to collect information became a computer with an internet connection. Surveys became a tool that could easily reach great numbers of subjects and could be returned with ease. These surveys then produced the results that became the focus for a portion of the medical literature that made its way to the internet.
Not all research can be conducted with help from the internet. Still, this tool has changed how much medical research is conducted and how the resulting medical literature is shared with its audience. The internet changed medical literature by making it accessible and by helping to conduct the research that led to it in the first place.
