For past generations, as our grandparents and possibly even parents will testify, tradition dictated that women were generally given gold jewellery as gifts. Presumably such a tradition had its roots in the connotations of wealth and grandeur that were more associated with gold than silver: after all gold is more expensive. However, today more people than ever are bucking the trend for gold and it is the accepted and done thing to buy silver necklaces and other jewellery for loved ones.
There was a time, or so I am lead to believe, when it would have been considered either a slight or a poor reflection on a man’s wealth and generosity to but silver necklaces for a lady. Not so today. People appear to be less concerned with maintaining appearances and projecting an image of wealth than before. That’s not to say society is any less shallow: it’s merely fashion instead of what other people will think that governs our choice of jewellery these days. Increasingly over the past couple of decades, we are more inclined to buy silver necklaces than ever, perhaps as a result of silver’s and white gold’s newfound place in vogue.
Fashion and celebrity are, of course, driving this trend. More celebrities, or perhaps their stylists, have awoken to the dawning realisation that in fact silver sometimes just looks better. The one size fits all, universal approach to jewellery has gone. Nowadays everyone knows that with some complexions and hair colours, silver simply looks better. That’s why more people with dark complexions and hair are wearing silver. Proof if you need it comes from Cheryl Cole who publically lamented the fact that her yellow gold wedding ring didn’t complement many outfits!
So if you haven’t already caught on to the trend to buy silver necklaces instead of gold, where have you been? Silver is the new gold, and it appears to be staying that way.

In the world of fashion one of the fastest growing segments is Asian fashion. This is due to several reasons not the least of which is the timeless appeal of many the styles and fabrics that come from countries such as China, India, Korea, and Japan. Prices have fallen and Asian fashion styles are becoming more and more popular throughout the world. Little known designers from places like Korea and Hong Kong are just beginning to look to exports for growth.
No matter where you are in the world you can already see the impact on the growth of the Asian fashion industry in your local stores. The Asian influence can be seen in clothing lines from high end women’s wear to everyday junior casual. Japanese styles such as the school girl look are popular for teens and the younger set while Indian influenced styles can be seen in trendy chic boutiques. In fact, the Indian look is now popular not just for its colorful fabrics and comfortable styling, but as part of the retro trend.
